Tips for Sanity in a Crazy World
I’m sure most of you out there are feeling on edge about the general state of the world. Most folks I’ve talked to have expressed a baseline level of anxiety that seems to weigh down the enjoyment of their everyday experiences. Everything seems to be upside down and most of us are feeling helpless in the midst of it. Here are a few tips for re-centering to so that we all have the energy to fight the good fight.
MEDITATE – Mindfulness can go a long way in times of turbulence. If you you’re a beginner, there are many videos and apps to help you get started. If meditation doesn't feel like your thing, sitting outside without a book or a phone and watching the world is a good alternative.
GIVE – There is no shortage of causes to donate to. If you don’t have money to donate, donate your time. Giving time and/or resources to your fellow humans is one of the most direct paths to feeling good. Puerto Rico could use your help, as well as California, The ACLU, The Innocence Project and there are many more.
REACH OUT – Connect with friends and family you haven’t seen or talked to in a while, to actually catch up, not commiserate or argue about politics or news. Get in touch with people in your community you think might need kind words, offer a helping hand. If you do decide to talk about the state of the world with loved ones, make it an actionable conversation, not a perseverative one.
SHUT IT DOWN – Take breaks from all media: social, news, and otherwise. Not because you want to put your head in the sand, but because your fear body desperately needs to rest. The news media is exploitative, they want you to be terrified so that they get ratings. That’s why they play the same violent clip over and over while they talk about anything mildly related.
GET PHYSICAL – Exercise can be extremely helpful in quelling anxiety. If you have friends or family members who like to partake in the same physical activities, get a group of folks together and go for a run or play a game of [insert your favorite team sport]. If you can't get out and exercise for one reason or another, do some stretching or yoga.
GET CREATIVE – Take time to do something you love doing, focus on it, get into flow. Collaborate with friends and family on creative projects. Remind yourself you are capable of doing awesome things and recharge your mind/heart/body so that you do have the energy to fight the good fight.
Remember that the world is getting better. It doesn’t seem like it but the general trend is toward more acceptance, less violence, and hopefully toward love. I’ve met too many amazing humans in my life and witnessed too much beauty and bravery and community to believe otherwise. Remember that love is an infinite resource, that pain is a fact of life but suffering is not.
Do you have things that you do to maintain your sanity these days? If you do, for the love of all things holy, post them in the comments, because we can use as many as we can get!
